THE MATZAH ISLAND

JEWS IN THE VIENNESE LEOPOLDSTADT 1918-38

About a third of Vienna’s Jewish population lived in the city’s second district between the Danube Canal and the Danube. Rich and poor, orthodox and atheist, communists, socialists and Zionists – all helped shape the district, called “the matzoh island”. All the synagogues were destroyed during the November pogroms, the people were either expelled or murdered.

Out of texts, memories and scattered picture documents emerges an idea of the diverse and contradictory life of Vienna’s Jewish people.

With 97 image reproductions and texts by Joseph Roth, Manès Sperber, Elias Canetti, Hermann Hakel, Friedrich Torberg, and many more.
